   Carolyn Dickman, Education Director

Every Wednesday morning I attempt to share with my fellow employee's something I've learned about living life with less stress. I didn't get the assignment because I'm sooo smart, but because I've lived the longest! This Thanksgiving week I knew the topic of "thanks giving" would be expected.

Of course I wanted to make my remarks unique. I know these people pretty well and they are good people. They already know about God, family and neighbors. They give money to causes and watch out for each other emotionally and physically. What could I tell them?

I remember a dear friend who said, "Getting old is just a matter of adjusting to a different pain every day." No, that's not negative; it's just reality for some. The ability to adjust is marvelous. I began my talk by stomping across the floor. "Look I'm no longer limping!" I had injured my foot four weeks ago and have limped for most of that time. I turned my ankle and the top and side of my foot was black and blue for three weeks. How wonderful it is to walk without pain! I am talking real joy here! We all think about those that are in daily pain or can't walk, but it takes a walk in those "shoes" in order to really appreciate our ability to just move about with grace and ease.

I asked my listeners what physical thing they were grateful for. I heard about healing frozen shoulders, broken bones, broken hearts and broken spirits. I listened as one of my work friends shared how grateful she was that someone had given her grocery money and how she had thanked and wished she could some day give people money. She shared how that person told her to notice how much she (the receiver) had given over the year to others. A co-worker reminded her that she (receiver) had listened to her can't-change-it concern. Just by listening receiver was a giver.

We again visited the life lesson we don't have to have money to be a giver, all we have to do is be present to our fellowman.

I didn't have to add a lot to our Wednesday Morning (WAM) – they've got it.

Gratefully yours,
Carolyn Dickman

DON'T PANIC!

  • Accept the feeling, it can't hurt you.
  • Give yourself permission to feel anxious.
  • Don't over-breathe. Breathe slowly through your nose.
  • Calm yourself with positive self-talk.
  • Let go. Just float and flow.
  • Distract yourself, it is only anxiety.
  • Use the adrenalin in a positive pursuit.
  • Don't let a bad day scare you.
  • Let time pass. IT WILL GO AWAY.
