Remember the Greek mythology story of Narcissus? He was a beautiful young man, the "fairest of them all." He happened upon a pool of water and looking into it he saw the most beautiful creature he'd ever seen. As he reached for the vision it shattered and distorted. No matter how many times he tried he could not hold his desired. He stopped eating, stopped everything, but the effort to convince the beautiful figure to come and be with him.
Narcissus eventually dies of grief because he could not possess his beloved. He lost his life because he couldn't go beyond the external. (And now we know where the word 'narcissistic' came from.J)
What happens when you really look beyond your reflection? How many times a day do you look in a mirror? How many of those times do you look beyond the reflection? How many times do you look for the "real" you?
It's been said that we are who we are when no one is looking. Do you clean your car by rolling down the window? If a clerk gives you too much change do you tell her? Do you download music without paying for it? Hmmmmmmmm?
Guess what? We probably all have done things that are not totally honorable. Shall we bow our heads and hate ourselves for not being perfect? Shall we give up on having positive self-esteem? Absolutely not! Having self-esteem means we love ourselves-faults and all. Can you work on what you don't like about you? Of course!
It's up to you to look into the "mirror," decide what you like and what you don't, change if you choose and keep on the journey of self-discovery.
