Work to do

It is amazing how much self-improvement I have yet to do. Not long ago I was driving to work in the early morning, on a country road, no traffic except the truck coming toward me. Northern Ohio is pretty flat so we were both doing a bit over the speed limit among the corn and bean fields.

The birds were chirping, the creeks burbling, the air a bit humid... the truck is riding that center line pretty close. The smell of rain is in the air; they did predict a couple of showers for the day... he is definitely over the centerline with only yards to go. Shall I blow the horn... is he falling asleep... flash my lights... ? I better head for the grassy apron. I felt no emotion except those involved in making decisions that would spare me. He's across the line and still angling left of center- feet to go. Decision time.

I brake and head for the shoulder; the truck jerks back to his side. I raise my fist as he passes me.

I think... "What if it was someone from the neighborhood?" (Country neighborhoods are quite large.) I felt embarrassed for my display of anger.

I continued on my way to work processing, processing (sometimes called-analyzing). My second thought was a pure, light bulb moment. I had raised my fist (first instinct – anger) instead of thanking God and the driver for not crinkling me!

Author, Dr. Wayne Dyer asks his audience, "If you squeeze an orange, what comes out?" The audience usually hesitates to answer because the answer seems too simple... "Juice?" Yes, juice. Now for the hard question, "Why?" Again the audience is reluctant to go out on a limb with an answer. Why does juice come out of a squeezed orange? What could this noted doctor, philosopher, thinker, be getting at? There is a hush... no one says anything and Wayne Dyer booms into the microphone, "Because that's what's inside!!!"

DON'T PANIC!

Accept the feeling, it can't hurt you.
Give yourself permission to feel anxious.
Don't over-breathe. Breathe slowly through your nose.
Calm yourself with positive self-talk.
Let go. Just float and flow.
Distract yourself, it is only anxiety.
Use the adrenalin in a positive pursuit.
Don't let a bad day scare you.
Let time pass. IT WILL GO AWAY.
