Some causes of stress might be severe enough to be pretty obvious - a major move, a change in jobs, a birth, a death. Other causes of stress might be of such an ordinary or day-to-day nature we barely think of them - that mildly annoying co-worker, your spouse’s more irritating habits, trouble paying the bills. Everything that causes stress in your life, both big and small, can be managed in a healthy way.

Causes of Internal Stress


Sometimes, we create our own stress - unintentionally, of course. Very busy schedules can easily be one of the major causes of stress. Always remember to enjoy some down time, too.

Other causes of stress include feeling threatened, fearful, confused or uncertain. The mind can have a powerful effect on the body, and stress is a good example of this phenomenon. Even having trouble with a difficult decision can be one of the causes of stress.

Don’t put too many expectations on yourself. Remember that you can’t do it all - and sometimes, you might not always accomplish every task you set out to master. Negative feelings about yourself and self-disappointment can cause a lot of stress. Cut yourself some slack…after all, you’re only human. It’s good to set goals - it’s not good to drive oneself to the brink of madness trying to fulfill them.

External Causes of Stress


Sometimes, stress just seems to happen. You may not cause stress through your own inner thoughts and feelings, your self-motivation or your busy schedule. You may feel stress because of something or someone you cannot control. These external causes of stress can be very difficult to manage.

Relationships, work, friends and family members can all become causes of stress under a certain set of circumstances. Even the ones you love the most can cause you to feel stress - and sometimes, it might seem they cause you more stress than most. Children, parents, lovers and siblings can all potentially cause stress.

Managing the Causes of Stress


Everyone experiences stress, and it’s probably also true that everyone has at some point been the cause of stress for someone else. Stress, and the causes of stress, can be managed to bring a little relief. Pinpoint why you’re feeling stressed so you can work out a solution. Sometimes, the solution may be to simply take a break or enjoy some relaxation. An hour of reading, walking or soaking in a hot tub can go a long way toward relieving stressful feelings.
