Panic disorder and hypochondria share very few similarities. A hypochondriac will typically have far more illnesses that they would be worried about whereas a person suffering from panic disorder will typically just be worried only about panic/anxiety attacks. Both are extremely debilitating to the productivity of ones life and both are also very curable. They do have some minor similarities in that they both involve fear of a type of illness.

You hear people always casually labeling someone a hypochondriac, but are they really? Does being concerned about every little sniffle and sneeze make you a hypochondriac? The answer is no. A hypochondriac will take it to obsessive levels and will truly believe that their life is in danger and death is imminent. A hypochondriac will most likely have panic attacks on their list of issues they are concerned about where as a person suffering from panic disorder will only be worried about the panic attacks.

It’s easy to see how someone with panic disorder could be seen as a hypochondriac. It is still a very debilitating disorder and does at times cause individuals suffering from it to drastically alter their lives as a result. Hypochondriacs tend to be more obsessed with real illnesses, illnesses that could lead to death. They are however both problems dealing with the psyche of the individual. In both cases counseling may be required but both are also certainly treatable. If you are suffering from either of these conditions, rest assured that there are others going through it too, and there are possible treatments to help you. Don't be afraid to reach out. Ultimately, panic disorder is an acute condition where the sufferer has sporadic bouts of intense fear and anxiety. Hypochondriasis, by contrast, is a more chronic, pervasive condition where the sufferer has more or less constant fears that he is suffering from one or more potentially terminal illnesses.
