Zyban

Zyban is the brand name for the drug bupropion hydrochloride when it is marketed as a smoking cessation aid. When it is marketed as an antidepressant, bupropion hydrochloride is known as Wellbutrin.

Function of Zyban

The function of Zyban is to enhance the activity of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. In addition to the mood elevating effects that can result, this activity can reduce levels of nicotine withdrawal and can decrease smoking urges in those addicted to nicotine.

Drug Interactions and Side Effects of Zyban

The side effects of Zyban may include dry mouth and sleepiness. Bupropion hydrochloride is popular because it tends to have fewer side effects than those caused by many antidepressant medications. However, risk of seizure is greater in those who take Zyban, so those who are already at risk for seizure should avoid Zyban. If you are taking another drug containing , then your risk of seizure increases as well. Those who are taking MAO inhibitors should discontinue use for at least two weeks before starting Zyban. In most cases, any side effects from Zyban are easily counterbalanced by the positive health effects of permanent tobacco cessation.

How to Take Zyban

Always take as directed by your doctor. Normally, Zyban should be taken in one 150 milligram tablet on the first morning of treatment. After three days, add one 150 milligram tablet 8 hours after the first one. You should not take more than 300 milligrams of Zyban in a day as risk of seizures increases considerably. Zyban is typically taken for three or four months, but can be extended to up to six months by your doctor if she determines it is necessary.

About Smoking Cessation

Quitting smoking is not always a matter of simple willpower. Those who have smoked for a long time are addicted to nicotine, and will suffer withdrawal symptoms to accompany their psychological need for cigarettes. Zyban can help manage the withdrawal symptoms and relieve the need for cigarettes. However there may be underlying psychological reasons why someone has become dependent upon smoking. For this reason it is a good idea for a smoker to undergo a therapeutic treatment plan to accompany their use of Zyban. Using therapies for managing stress and understanding the root cause of the habit in combination with a drug like Zyban may provide the best chance for a long-term, permanent solution to a smoking habit.

"I had been on medication for ten years prior to using the Attacking Anxiety and Depression Program. Ten years and even my psychiatrist said I may have to be on drugs for the rest of my life. Now without medication I feel wonderful. The Attacking Anxiety and Depression Program was a miracle for me." - Ginny

So there I was, a nurse, working in the emergency room taking care of people who have this and I couldn't help myself. I am different now because of the program. I'm living life, I am connected. I feel more energetic. I enjoy silly things. I used to say that I just didn't have time for that. If I wouldn't have found the program I think I would still be on a very dark road. - Mona

Before I found the program I had trouble just walking out to the mailbox to get the mail. I thought I was going to drop over and die or faint. After the program, everything's changed. I'm just glad that I can live my life and not be afraid of what people think. I'm not afraid to go for my dreams, I don't sit around and wait as life passes my by. - Elizabeth

I first started experiencing anxiety and panic attacks when I was in college. I didn't understand what was happening so I started isolating myself and I started drinking more. I started feeling better when I first got the program. Life now to me is very good. There is more for me to do and I can do anything if I put my mind to it. - Roderick
