Wellbutrin, and its variations Wellbutrin XL and Wellbutrin SR, is the brand name for the drug bupropion hydrochloride, which has been highly successful in treating depression. Wellbutrin has also been used as an aid to smoking cessation.
Function of Wellbutrin
Wellbutrin is indicated as a treatment for major depression. It works
by adjusting the levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine and
norepinephrine in the brain. What is interesting and promising about
Wellbutrin is that its chemical action differs from all other classes
of antidepressant medications, such as MAO inhibitors, tricyclics,
tetracyclics and SSRIs. This means that patients who did not experience
successful relief from these other types of drugs, or who found the
side effects from these other drugs to be intolerable, may be helped by
Wellbutrin.
Drug Interactions and Side Effects of Wellbutrin
Many of the negative side effects experienced with other
antidepressants are not present with Wellbutrin for many patients. That
being said, some side effects of Wellbutrin may include constipation,
agitation, dry mouth and dizziness, especially early in the treatment.
Wellbutrin has been associated with a higher risk of seizures, so those
at greater risk of seizures may wish to avoid using Wellbutrin, or use
it with additional caution.
How to Take Wellbutrin
Patients usually take 200-300 milligrams of Wellbutrin a day. The drug
should be split into equal 100mg doses spaced evenly throughout the
day. The sustained release or extended release formula is typically
taken once in the morning (150mg), with an evening 150mg dose added
after a few days. Doses of SR and XL should always be taken at least
eight hours apart. Never double dose under any circumstances with
Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin usually takes about four weeks to build up
effective levels in the bloodstream, so those who take Wellbutrin
should not be discouraged if they do not feel an immediate effect.
About Wellbutrin and Depression
While Wellbutrin can be very successful with the symptoms of major
depression, those who are being treated with antidepressants can be at
greater risk of suicide and self-destructive behavior as the treatment
begins, particularly in children and adolescents. For this reason it is
very important to monitor patients closely even if the Wellbutrin
treatment appears to be effective. It is also very important to pair
pharmacological treatment with psychotherapy, as these can help the
patient get to the root of their depression and improve their long-term
prognosis.
