Vistaril

Vistaril and Atarax are brand names for the drug hydroxyzine hydrochloride, which is an antihistamine that has also be successful in relieving some of the symptoms of tension anxiety, including anxiety symptoms stemming from physical illnesses.

Function of Vistaril

Anti-anxiety is actually a side effect of Vistaril, whose main function is to reduce the effects of histamine. Histamine is the body’s response to an allergen, which can narrow and inflame air passages in the lungs and cause itching and discomfort.

Drug Interactions and Side Effects of Vistaril

The key positive side effect of Vistaril is its ability to relieve symptoms of anxiety in some users. Other side effects which may be experienced include dry mouth, drowsiness and in some cases tremors, twitches or convulsions, although these last few are usually only experienced in patients taking atypically high doses of Vistaril. Since Vistaril depresses the central nervous system, patients should not combine Vistaril with alcohol, barbiturates or narcotics.

How to Take Vistaril

Vistaril may be given as an injection or as oral tablets. When given for relief of tension and anxiety, the typical dose is 50 to 100 milligrams four times a day. It is important not to take two doses at once. If you skip a dose and too much time has elapsed for you to make it up, just skip it and go on to the next dose when it is scheduled. Vistaril should usually not be taken for more than four months.

Vistaril as an Anxiety Medication

Although Vistaril was not initially conceived as an anti-anxiety medication, it can be a great relief to those suffering from short-term anxiety as can occur with sudden stressful situations. Those with long-term anxiety problems should consider a more comprehensive form of treatment. This can include medications and other forms of therapy. Cognitive behavioral techniques have proven highly successful in the long-term treatment of anxiety symptoms. This type of therapy, as well as other psychotherapy treatments, may help patients get to the root of their anxiety problems and learn how to manage them effectively. Medication can be helpful, but usually only to an extent. These medications are often used to give patients the opportunity to make the most of their psychological and behavioral treatments.

"I had been on medication for ten years prior to using the Attacking Anxiety and Depression Program. Ten years and even my psychiatrist said I may have to be on drugs for the rest of my life. Now without medication I feel wonderful. The Attacking Anxiety and Depression Program was a miracle for me." - Ginny

So there I was, a nurse, working in the emergency room taking care of people who have this and I couldn't help myself. I am different now because of the program. I'm living life, I am connected. I feel more energetic. I enjoy silly things. I used to say that I just didn't have time for that. If I wouldn't have found the program I think I would still be on a very dark road. - Mona

Before I found the program I had trouble just walking out to the mailbox to get the mail. I thought I was going to drop over and die or faint. After the program, everything's changed. I'm just glad that I can live my life and not be afraid of what people think. I'm not afraid to go for my dreams, I don't sit around and wait as life passes my by. - Elizabeth

I first started experiencing anxiety and panic attacks when I was in college. I didn't understand what was happening so I started isolating myself and I started drinking more. I started feeling better when I first got the program. Life now to me is very good. There is more for me to do and I can do anything if I put my mind to it. - Roderick
