Tofranil

Tofranil is the brand name for Imipramine hydrochloride. Imipramine hydrochloride is member of the group of drugs known as tricyclic antidepressants.

Function of Tofranil

Tofranil works by increasing the activity of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. It has been shown to be effective in treating the symptoms of depression, as well as in treating attention deficit hyperactivity and bedwetting in children. It is also effective at managing the symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorders and bulimia in some patients.

Drug Interactions and Side Effects of Tofranil

It is extremely important to avoid taking any MAO inhibitors while using Tofranil. Doing so can lead to a deadly interaction. Make sure that you have discontinued your tricyclic for at least two weeks before considering an MAO inhibitor and vice versa. Tofranil should not be taken with alcohol. Some potential effects of Tofranil include dry mouth, breast enlargement, changes in blood pressure and nausea.

How to Take Tofranil

A typical dose of Tofranil is 75 milligrams a day, but your doctor may increase your dosage to as high as 150 milligrams. More than 200 milligrams of Tofranil per day is not recommended. Those who have recently had a heart attack should not take Tofranil, and those with glaucoma, liver disease, kidney problems or diabetes should use caution when considering Tofranil. Potential patients should disclose all health conditions and drugs to their doctors before accepting a prescription for Tofranil. If you miss a dose of Tofranil, you should never double dose. If it is close to the time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and resume with the next scheduled dose.

About Tofranil for Anxiety and Depression

Some patients have had great success using Tofranil for conditions like Major Depression and Panic Disorder. If you do not find that you are getting results after taking the drug for several months, there are other classes of antidepressants and anxiolytics that may be able to help you. Furthermore, no matter what level of relief you are getting from your antidepressant medication, it is a good idea to pair that medication with other forms of therapeutic treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy or group counseling. Getting the help of a clinical professional to explore the root causes of your anxiety and depression can make healing much faster and more effective. While brain chemistry is often one of the culprits in these conditions, environmental and psychological factors are often also at play and should be addressed while the biochemical issues are being managed pharmacologically.
